Wils reviews: Xian Ding Wei, Taiwanese Tea Room @ 1 Utama Shopping Complex

Living in a country such as Malaysia where the Chinese ethnicity is plentiful, we are most times spoilt for choice with the different types of Chinese cuisines. Taiwanese food is definitely one of them that isn’t overlooked with the huge variety and savoury food it provides.

Xian Ding Wei Taiwanese Tea Room comes to the fray when Taiwanese food comes to mind. Located right next to Oriental Cravings on the New Wing, you can hardly miss it because of the crowd it attracts (especially on weekends) and the huge outlet that has been established.

The traditional Chinese ambience sets the tone in making you feel right at home.

Retro FTW!

Despite the homely ambience, you will also be served by waiter and waitresses who are fluent in both Cantonese and Mandarin. Often Chinese restaurants have the tendency to hire immigrants who are doesn’t speak neither of them which can be quite frustrating especially to the elderly.

My grandparents shared the Taiwanese-Style Seafood Fried Vermicelli, RM14.90 which is one of their prized dishes. Served in a portion big enough to share among 2 people, it definitely oozes the class for being a top dish. Cooked to perfection in flavour and the noodles not too soggy, with it being a vegetarian dish, there’s no better to go healthy.

I on the other hand ordered the Stewed Pork and Fish with Cabbage, RM18.90. It was served with Minced Pork Rice, Herbal Soup and some light appetizers to complete the set. Flavoured excellently, I was quite disappointed with the amount of fish; barely two small slices of them. Not one dish I would recommend unless you are going vegetarian based.

The only bright side to the set was the Minced Pork Rice which is one of my all time favourite even as a kid. This was no exception. Rice to sauce to minced pork ratio; even.

Just for kicks, I thought we’d share the Taiwan-Style Deep Fried Shrimp Roll, RM13.90. One the menu, it is one of the most raved about side dishes recommended by the restaurant and its not surprising why. Crispy, fillings of prawns and various vegetables with dipping chilly sauce.

This not being my first time at Xian Ding Wei, it was one of those experiences that I wasn’t exactly pleased namely because of the main course I ordered. Still, it doesn’t deflect the fact that most of their dishes such as the Fried Beef Noodles with ‘Sa Cha’ is highly recommended by me personally.
