ronnycakes reviews: Delicious Café’s New Menu, Mid Valley Megamall PJ

Delicious used to be one of those places where what they served was underwhelming compared to what you expected from them. After a few increasingly less satisfying trips to Delicious (used to only go there for desserts but even those started going downhill), I completely stopped going at all for about a year or so. Until we recently discovered on boolicious’ instagram that Delicious had a new chef and a new menu! So adventurous foodies that we are, we just had to see this one for ourselves.

P1160922
I had something very basic for my main, Aglio Olio Spaghettini with Seafood (RM25.40) which isn’t actually a new item on the menu, but interestingly it tasted a lot better than the last time I had it. I used to have only two words for pastas at Delicious, oily and bland. This one tasted good!

P1160926
Wil’s highly anticipated Pumpkin Risotto (RM25.90) with char-grilled prawn, squid and toasted almonds. Very unique and very healthy (no overdose of milk or cream) and the seafood was extremely aromatic from being char-grilled. Two thumbs up!

P1160943
Dessert was an extremely good looking Cold Chocolate Fondant (RM14.90) with a center of melting caramel and a base of macadamia nut brittle. The chocolate fondant and macadamia nuts were delicious (though I have to say it was still a little too sweet for me) but the macadamia nut brittle base was a bit odd. It was quite hard and tough (super chewing needed) and tasted more like soggy oatmeal biscuits than anything else.

There is a definite increase in the standard of food at Delicious so for those who have sworn off going back to Delicious, it may be time to revisit it and try for yourself.

Clarissane reviews: Dubu Dubu Seoul Food @ Mid Valley Megamall

With everything Korean hitting our Malaysian shores these days, Korean food is of course never left out.

Barely a year old, a new Korean joint with a chic name – Dubu Dubu gives the popular Ko Hyang Korean Country Delights some competition.

IMG_4206

Located in the LG concourse area of Mid Valley, this new place has commanded a great following for those foodies looking for a quick, no-frills and inexpensive Korean meal.

IMG_4208

IMG_4209

Even the food on display looked too enticing!

IMG_4213

IMG_4211

Typical Korean fare of Bibimbap, choose your preference of chicken or beef.. I of course chose the latter ;)
What is Korean food without beef :P

IMG_4216

Mix it all up and enjoy!

IMG_4220

All food comes with the usual three-sided Korean banchans, what I totally look forward to at every Korean meal!

IMG_4214

The kim chi was good! Couldn’t resist a second helping :D

IMG_4218

Another one of my all-time favourite: Spicy Kimchi Soup with Stewed Tofu and Beef served with brown rice. This was average I enjoyed the Bibimbap more.

IMG_4219

IMG_4222

But gotta give credits to the soft, tender and chewy texture of the beef slices!

IMG_4225

Overall a pretty delicious dining experience with reasonable prices under RM20. Will definitely been on my list if I crave a quick, decent Korean meal. I think the sprouting of too many Ko Hyang joints have made their food standard deteriorate. Dubu Dubu would be a good alternative :)

ronnycakes reviews: Brotzeit German Bier Bar & Restaurant, Mid Valley Megamall

One of the problems we always face is deciding what to eat. It takes us years hours to decide what to have for lunch and on the particular day that my friend and I visited Brotzeit, we actually walked from one end of MV to the other hunting down Dragon-i and Canton-i but finally decided on Brotzeit amidst sweat and frustration (sudden change from Chinese to Western) since I had just read a review on it the night before.
Anyway, Brotzeit is located on the stretch of restaurants facing the ground floor entrance to the Gardens Mall and is a German bar cum restaurant that serves good ol’ pub grub and pork sausages.
Prices on the menu are in fact pretty steep but Brotzeit now has set lunches which are very affordable, which explained the large influx of people during lunchtime.

P1070896_thumb2

They have a variety of dishes – chicken, fish or pork. All German style and if you add RM6 for a Soup of the Day or RM8.90 for a salad, you get a dessert thrown in!

P1070898_thumb2
With the set lunches, an extra RM2 will get you an Ice Lemon Tea.

P1070907_thumb2

P1070908_thumb2
Soup of the day was Garlic Soup which was a little too cheesy and creamy for my liking, but portions were generous. The garlic was very aromatic though.

P1070913_thumb2
The soup came with a combination of sour rye bread and some mixed nuts bread which was incredibly healthy. You don’t really get this sort of bread with soup usually, especially for a set meal that costs less than 15 bucks.

P1070919_thumb2
My friend opted for the “Bavarian style” sliced pork fillet (RM14.50) – sliced pork fillet in herbed cream sauce served with salad and handmade spätzle (bavarian egg noodles). The egg noodles looked a bit like scrambled eggs but tasted a bit like clumps of spaghetti. It was creamy as well and I guess the egg noodles take some getting used to. The sauce of the pork fillet was a little sour-ish and savoury-ish which whets the appetite.

P1070920_thumb2
I had the Nürnberger chicken sausages (RM13) – Grilled chicken sausages on Pretzel bread served with fries. This looked really good on the menu and actual presentation did not disappoint. Taste wise was good too; the fries were seasoned perfectly and the chicken sausages were perfectly done, juicy and springy. Pretzel bread was…. hard. :p

P1070925_thumb2
Three sauces came with the sausages; I couldn’t identify the brown sauce but it was a tasted a bit sweet. The obligatory chili and mustard. :)

P1070928_thumb3
We were served a Chef’s Creation dessert with a sort of yoghurt-like/custard-like consistency, with raspberry puree on the top and bottom. This was very refreshing as it was tangy, just the right amount of sweetness. The raspberry puree was a little tooo sour though.
If you flick through the menu you’ll find that most of the dishes at Brotzeit are well above RM20 for main courses and RM15 for starters. So for set lunches to be at this price is incredibly value for money. They quite a few selections as well so it makes a pretty good place to have a nice lunch with friends.
On another note, the pork sausages looked incredibly good (and expensive) and hopefully I’ll be able to try those on my next visit. :D

ronnycakes reviews: Giant Macaron @ Delectables by Su, Gardens Mall

I have never been a huge fan of macarons to be honest, I find them a little too sweet for my liking. Especially the ones at *cough* *cough* Levain *cough*.
But since I’ve heard really good things about the macaroons from Delectables and have been reassured that they’re not sickeningly sweet AND the added factor that they are huge (bigger than my palm), I took the plunge and tried one!

P1070540

The packaging is really lovely. I picked out the Salted Chocolate Macaron for RM10 per piece. RM10 per piece is actually pretty reasonable since macarons do get pretty pricey (averaging around RM3-4 for the normal seized ones) and these are huge.

P1070538

P1070541

The macaron is an adorable shade of pale pink with a generous dark chocolate ganache centre.

P1070556

The texture of the macaron was lovely, crunch on the outside and soft on the inside. The dark chocolate ganache filling was also not too sweet and had the right amount of richness.
On the other hand, I didn’t taste any salted chocolate and the macaroon was still a little too sweet for my liking. They really have to start being a little more light-handed on the sugar when it comes to macarons.

The macarons really are huge, I had to split and eat it 2 separate occasions and I have to say it started to get a bit addictive after a while despite the sweetness.

If you’re a fan of macarons this comes highly recommended! If you’re not a fan, its worth a try as well because for the price you are paying it is quite worth your money. And it tastes good and looks good too! What’s not to love?

Note: Macaroons and Macarons are actually two different things! The authentic French spelling for these sweet pastries is actually macaron. Check wiki for more information on what Macaroons REALLY are!

Clarissane reviews: Tony Roma’s @ The Gardens, Mid Valley

Mention Western food and Tony Roma’s springs to my mind. On weekdays, they have their daily set lunches which comes with soup, drink and a main course which you can choose from a variety of food from salads, steaks, to burgers or sandwiches from RM16.90++ onwards. Portions are so generous, leaving me always stuffed to the brim! Now, this is what I call value for money :P

IMG_2127

They usually have two types of soup served so customers get more variety.. the one here is their Potato Soup with bite-sized chunks of potato in it which is pretty good if you are a potato lover! All their soups come with a small packet of crisps (really good crisps!) as well.

(I’m always tempted to ask the staff what brand of crisps they use, but I’m usually too embarassed hehe)

IMG_2128

I usually always have their Beef Stew Soup whenever its on the menu on that day. It is soooo delicious I always polish clean the whole bowl :D

IMG_2129

Check out the beef in the soup!! Looking at it makes me drool already!

They also throw in carrots and onions in the soup hence giving it the fragrant smell with a slight sweet-sourish tang to the soup which is why I absolutely love it. The tenderness of the beef slices compliments the soup perfectly!! I don’t mind having this as a main meal by itself (yes, it’s that good). Dip it with toasted ciabatta and VOILA!

IMG_2130

I rarely order salads at restaurants due to the fact that it’s usually not worth what you pay for. How expensive can vegetables be..it doesn’t justify charging such high prices right? :P

The Tony’s Asian Salad here is the only salad I have when dining out. It comes with their special-made house sauce topped with generous slices of grilled chicken. This is one salad I swear by and usually always have it when I feel that I shouldn’t overindulge for the day.

IMG_2133

Bite-sized grilled chicken..perfecto!

IMG_2135

IMG_2131

The Mojito Chicken topped with Pineapple Slices is pretty good as well if you want a balanced meal. It’s grilled chicken breast topped with pineapple salsa and comes with a side of coleslaw and fries. I usually always have the fries switched to mash potatoes instead for a healthier option.

IMG_3658

I’ve also tried their Fried Mushrooms in my previous visits here. It’s not bad but nothing amazing.

P1080001

Their Onion Loaf is a great appetizer. It is huge so order it if you’re with a big group of people or if you’re just an avid onion lover. It tastes exactly like onion rings with a light, crisp batter.

IMG_3660

Of course, a trip here would be incomplete without their famed BBQ Beef Ribs! I reckon it would taste even better if it was Pork Ribs instead (they serve pork ribs in their Singapore joints) but the beef ribs here are also pretty worth eating! Just the right amount of meat and fat- making it oh-so-juicy and tender. I always end up licking up everything till the bone :D

All the items come in ala-carte orders as well..but I gotta admit, the weekdays set lunch is the one really worth going for! Spend above RM30 and you can get a RM10 off your next visit! How? Just keep your receipt, go online, fill up their survey form and take down the code number when you submit the survey. I always do that and leave RM10 heavier in my pocket :P

IMG_2139

Whilst flipping through their cocktails menu, I stumbled upon this! A hot cup of beverage for only RM0.50! It’s valid for dine-in from 3-6pm. And so, of course we ended our meal with a nice, hot, steaming cup of coffee :D

IMG_2141
Latte

IMG_2142
Cappuccino

I thought our coffee lacked a bit of aroma and needs a stronger ‘kick’ but for RM0.50, I should not complain! Most coffee joints charge 10 times the amount.

IMG_2138

Currently, their also doing their bit for charity – a Tony Roma’s Gift Pack for RM10 nett comprising complimentary coupons with proceeds going to the National Autism Society of Malaysia.

So head there, enjoy the food and do your bit for charity! ;)
