ronnycakes reviews: The Grind Burger Bar, Section 17, Petaling Jaya

We’ve had our fair share of burger hunting these past few weeks, and the latest thing to hit this blog is the newly opened The Grind Burger Bar in Section 17. If I’m not mistaken, it has only been open for about two to three weeks and I actually think this is the soonest we’ve ever visited a place since it’s opening.

On the same row as Kanna Curry House, it was a quiet Sunday as we turned up before 12pm (The Grind’s opening time) and took our seats in the still-empty restaurant. The Grind sounds a lot like The Daily Grind, and the decor looks a lot alike too but what makes The Grind preferable to us is that it serves pork (yay!!) and the prices are definitely a lot cheaper than at The Daily Grind. Less talk, more pictures!

Vintage pin-up girls holding burgers race the brick and white walls; sauces and condiments; the empty (but not for long) seats.
The Grind Burger Bar is cozy, comfortable and well-lit.

The Fiery Peppercorn Burger (RM16); pork patty with crusted peppercorns, natural cheddar, greens, onion silvers, fresh tomato and mayonnaise.

P1240730
All-pork patty encrusted in pepper. I found the pork patty a little dry and a tad bit bland, but maybe that’s just me as Wils was happily chomping away.

P1240740
Something different from your usual hot dog: The Big Black Dog (RM16); pork bratwurst served on a pitch black charcoal bun topped with chilli pork, natural cheddar, mozzarella and fresh onions, served with herbed fries and greens.

P1240732
The pork bratwurst was juicy, and went very well with the chili pork. I loved this!

P1240736
Extra flavour was contributed by the generous heaping of mozzarella and cheddar.

P1240723 P1240725
Special mention should go to the fries, because they were sprinkled with nori seaweed salt. Delicious!

For our meal, the bill came up to only RM37.40, that’s definitely value for money for taste and portion as burgers like these would probably set you back more than RM25 in other places.
We’ll definitely be heading here again to try the other things on the menu.

7, Jalan 17/45, Section 17, Petaling Jaya.
(Same row as Kanna Curry House, further down from the Police Station)

ronnycakes reviews: Carnation Cafe, Disneyland Park, Anaheim

Once again, it seems like we’ve left our blog lying under a thin layer of dust, especially after we took a long break after coming back from our holiday in the States (!!), and especially after getting over that severe jet lag that I was feeling. It’s been 10 years since my last plane trip and I’ve never travelled further than South East Asia before, so the long-haul flight and 16 hour time difference was especially hard on me. The first few days I looked absolutely horrifying in photos because I was so god darned tired. XD

Anywayyyyy, I only have one word to summarize our trip: FUN! :D
Especially Disneyland... gosh, it’s like my idea of heaven. I know, I know, I sound like an absolute child. But really, I had such great time. The rides were awesome, the “cast members” were ultra polite, and everything was super whimsy and vintage and old-school Mickey.

Food there was pretty expensive though, but on our last night at Disneyland Park, Wils and I decided to splurge and have a meal at one of the park restaurants, and we went for Carnation Cafe which has made a name for itself for serving honest American fare at prices that are not too cut-throat (for American standards that is).

P1210815
I had a Warm Spinach Salad with Grilled Chicken (USD14.99), Grilled Chicken, Spinach, Boiled Eggs, Sauteed Shiitake Mushrooms, and Pickled Onions tossed with Warm Pancetta-Mustard Seed Vinaigrette.
One thing good about the USA is that all portions are at least twice the size of the ones you get here in KL. Salads over here would hardly be enough for a snack let alone a meal. So anyway, this warm spinach salad was one of the best salads I had over there... it was such a change from the generic romaine lettuce, and the dressing was tangy and savoury.

Wils had his Main Street Cheeseburger (USD11.99): Angus Chuck Patty, Tillamook Cheddar, Tomato, Red Onion, Lettuce and House Sauce on Toasted Brioche. He told me it was one of the best burgers he had (or maybe we were just super hungry haha).

I still miss that salad.

ronnycakes reviews: Barn BBQ, Bangsar Village

Today when I opened up this blog to take a look at it, I swear I saw some dust blow off my keyboard. It has been that long since we updated this space, and been quite a long while since we’ve actually stepped out of the house to actively seek for new eateries *hangs head in shame*. I’ve recently been bitten by the baking bug and spend almost every weekend at home dressed in oversized shirts and shorts (like a true housewife-in-training) baking up a storm. Soon I’ll share my results and these recipes on this blog too! :D

I think I’ve found my new favourite place for value-for-money gourmet sausages. Barn BBQ is a deli and grilled meats restaurant that is right next to Ben’s General Food Store in BV, and brings with it some deli items that are similar to those at BGFS but a wider variety. On the opposite side of the deli is a fridge chock full of sausages, steaks, lamb shanks that are grilled fresh to order.

A variety of imported spreads and sauces are also available at Barn BBQ (ala stuff you get in B.I.G).

Wils was feeling gluttonous so he ordered us a Clam Chowder in a Bread Bowl which was run of the mill, but comfortable to have on a rainy night.

P1200297
Beef Lasagne, and we were given a huge portion. Wils could barely finish it!

P1200172
For those who love good solid meaty food, the Black Angus Striploin (RM25 per 100g) is done perfectly by Barn BBQ. Even for someone who doesn’t eat beef (yours truly – a sacrilege I know), I found myself cutting more than one piece just because it tasted delicious.

P1200180
The steak came with a side of mashed potato, salad and black pepper sauce (you can choose from a range of sauces on the menu).

P1200168

P1200164
On to the sausages! The first time I went, I had the Chicken Cheese Krainer and Dynamite Chicken. Barn BBQ serves their sausages by grams, and all varieties of sausages on the menu (be it lamb, beef, chicken) are priced at RM8 per 100g. Minimum order is 200g, and 200g roughly gives you about 4 sausages take or leave a few grams.
The star of the show for me was definitely the Chicken Dynamite, which I found deliciously spicy and flavorful and grilled to perfection. The Chicken Cheese Krainer was good too, but not so good that I would make it a must-have.

P1200162
All sausages come with a side of salad.

 P1200267
Wils also tried the Spicy Lamb Sausage which he also had nothing but praise for.

P1200306 P1200271

Barn BBQ is fast becoming one of our go-to places when we’re in the mood for something heavy and meaty. My personal recommendation would be to try the sausages (especially the Chicken Dynamite one) but stay away from the more generic chicken sausages as they tend to be average (downsides of not eating beef or lamb). A 3rd return trip is definitely on the cards to try their burgers and more of their deli items.
