ronnycakes reviews: Breakfast at Jarrod and Rawlins, Lorong Dungun

Once in a while our craving for good ol’ fashioned breakfast food will strike and the quest for the best continues! After going to college along Lorong Dungun for the past 3 and some years, I only recently discovered that Jarrod and Rawlins’ is  located less than 1km away from my campus.

Jarrod and Rawlins’ breakfast comes in two versions: Fried Breakfast and “The Full Works”. The difference between the two is that J&R Fried Breakfast is a slightly smaller portion compared to the full works which come with double of everything. Since we were sharing, we opted for J&R’s Special “The Full Works” (RM34).

Coffee or Tea, and orange juice is served. Sadly, the OJ tasted like the bland watery version that is airplane OJ so minus points for that! Best one I’ve had so far is Plan B’s breakfast whose OJ is fresh and pulpy and tastes like the sort I would squeeze myself at home.

The Full Works Breakfast Platter! With Heinz Baked Beans, Crispy Bacon, J&R signature sausages, Fried Mushrooms, Two Organic Sunny side up eggs, Grilled Tomatoes, Hash Browns, and Fried Bread.

Since J&R’s are a deli, you can be rest assured their sausages and meats are top-notch gourmet sausages and cuts. Everything was nicely done, hash browns were crispy, bacon was juicy and flavorful, and eggs were done just right!

Everyone’s favorite.

After polishing off everything, we were incredibly full so no worries about not being well satisfied if you share with someone. J&R’s breakfast did not disappoint and I can consider it one of the better ones I’ve personally tried with the exception of the drinks. Now I want to go back and try other stuff! :D

Clarissane reviews: Hawker Delights @ Restaurant Shangri La, Damansara Heights

Whenever my friends and I need a quick when we’re feeling broke lunch fix after classes, we usually always head down here for their variety of hawker food served. Like most hawker joints, they have quite a variety of hawker food to choose from.

The Pork Ball Noodles, RM4.50 here is worth a mention. Ronnycakes swears by this dish.. only having this when she comes. Just the right amount of flavour in the soup, not overly salty or MSG-laden with bouncy pork balls. One of the ‘healthier’ option of hawker food you can find, really.

IMG_2298

We usually have it with vermicelli because it really goes well with the soup and is not overly filling like the usual yellow noodles or kuey teow. Of course, they have these on option.

I for one am a huge fan of Fish Head Noodles! I always patronise the famous Woo Pin Fish Head Noodle in Taman Desa (which I have yet to blog about but will soon!) and whenever I have this dish anywhere else, I usually set Woo Pin as a benchmark :p

The Fish Head Noodle in this place is also worth eating. At RM5.50 a pop, it is very much cheaper than the one in Woo Pin which goes for RM7. One thing I like about this dish here is the type of vermicelli that comes with it. Here, there is an option of the usual vermicelli or the thicker one which I usually have. The texture is firmer and springier which goes really well with the creamy soup.

You can opt for the fish paste (if you’re too lazy to take out the bones) or the fried fish meat which I usually have and enjoy licking off the bones :p

IMG_2302

The fried fish has its own flavour once bitten into! Well marinated and crispy.

Mixed with all the goodness! One of my top favourite hawker food! :)

I reckon it would taste better with more pickles though! They tend to be a bit stingy with the pickles :(

There is also the famous Hong Kee Wantan Noodles here. I however personally think that it’s mediocre and nothing really much to shout about. I’ve only tried it once sometime ago and I was sorely disappointed. It lacked taste and turned out dry and overly oily. This once was enough to put me off and I never ordered it again. Haha. But most tables usually have this so it’s probably personal preference :)

Parking can be quite a headache during peak periods though, so to avoid the crowd, its best to come before 12pm.

ronnycakes reviews: Hawker fare at Seng Lee Coffeeshop, Bukit Damansara

I’ve heard great things about the Char Kuey Teow at Seng Lee Coffeeshop, Bukit Damansara and it had been a while since my last visit, so one day after class me and the unimates decided to head down and have some good ol’ fashioned local hawker fare. :)

This block of shops has been in the Bukit Damansara area for a very long time. Back before I was born, my mum and her sister would drop by in the shoplots for some pork ball noodles or curry noodles on their off days.

The Char Kuey Teow here costs RM5 a pop, and comes with the usuals, lots of beansprouts and cockles. Sad to say, the standard has dropped even more since my last visit. Apparently I hear that the man who used to fry the noodles has passed the mantle on to his daughter, and that caused the drop in standard.
The char kuey teow lacked wok hei and was bland in taste. I also found it too dry for my liking. However, the stall was quite busy since I timed my visit near the lunch crowd and the rush in orders may have contributed to the drop in standard.

The Pork Noodles stall was quite good infact, the soup was tasty and the ingredients were plentiful. With the addition of a raw egg and a dash of lard, I’m sure this would appeal to a lot of foodies. :D
On the downside, I felt lightly thirsty after the meal, which can be attributed to MSG added in the soup.

The Curry Noodles was of the KL-style (as Clarissane so kindly educated me on the differences of Penang and KL style curry :P) and the gravy was thick and fragrant.

A popular place for office workers and students alike, do come by and try out the pork noodles and curry laksa, and maybe the char kuey teow during non-peak hours.
