ronnycakes reviews: Korean BBQ at Little Korea, Solaris Mon’t Kiara

I’ve been thinking and thinking of Korean BBQ recently and especially the one at Little Korea which was one of the best BBQs I’ve had. It’s been sitting backlogged in my list of posts (had it on New Year’s Eve) so forgive me if there’s a discrepancy with names and pricing.

Korean BBQ is best shared to be able to try more things, how much can two fellas eat (plus the fact that Korean places give so much banchan)?

P1100768
Sam Gyoub Sal (RM29) or pork belly slices, is great for barbeque, the natural pork fat that comes oozing out when you grill the meats makes it better than any ordinary stir-fry.

P1100781
You can barbeque it yourself, or ask one of the waiters to do it for you. We requested the waiters to do it for us because we were too chicken faced with a spitting and sizzling pan *shy*.

P1100789
The meat was great eaten on its own with the spicy bean paste sauce Little Korea provided for dipping, or wrapped up in fresh lettuce with the provided condiments and sauces.

P1100799

P1100770
We also had a bean paste sauce O Jing Oh (RM38) or marinated squid, which was top notch. Very fresh pieces of well-marinated squid in the spicy savoury bean sauce. Went great with rice!

P1100809

P1100823

P1100818
Finally we had a Kimchi Jeon (RM27) or kimchi pancake, to share, and found it pretty disappointing, the only downside of the night. The pancake was bland and soft and barely tasted of anything.

In conclusion, Little Korea’s BBQ is definitely one to try, can’t go wrong with the BBQ meats. Soups there are really good as well, so bring a large group with you to try a larger range of dishes! We hear the Kimchi Hot Pot is good too.

Btw, if you haven’t done so already, like our Facebook page!

Clarissane reviews: Dubu Dubu Seoul Food @ Mid Valley Megamall

With everything Korean hitting our Malaysian shores these days, Korean food is of course never left out.

Barely a year old, a new Korean joint with a chic name – Dubu Dubu gives the popular Ko Hyang Korean Country Delights some competition.

IMG_4206

Located in the LG concourse area of Mid Valley, this new place has commanded a great following for those foodies looking for a quick, no-frills and inexpensive Korean meal.

IMG_4208

IMG_4209

Even the food on display looked too enticing!

IMG_4213

IMG_4211

Typical Korean fare of Bibimbap, choose your preference of chicken or beef.. I of course chose the latter ;)
What is Korean food without beef :P

IMG_4216

Mix it all up and enjoy!

IMG_4220

All food comes with the usual three-sided Korean banchans, what I totally look forward to at every Korean meal!

IMG_4214

The kim chi was good! Couldn’t resist a second helping :D

IMG_4218

Another one of my all-time favourite: Spicy Kimchi Soup with Stewed Tofu and Beef served with brown rice. This was average I enjoyed the Bibimbap more.

IMG_4219

IMG_4222

But gotta give credits to the soft, tender and chewy texture of the beef slices!

IMG_4225

Overall a pretty delicious dining experience with reasonable prices under RM20. Will definitely been on my list if I crave a quick, decent Korean meal. I think the sprouting of too many Ko Hyang joints have made their food standard deteriorate. Dubu Dubu would be a good alternative :)

Clarissane reviews: Bulgogi BBQ House @ The Strand, Kota Damansara

A write up in the NST a few weeks back about a hidden, yet-to-be discovered Korean joint in the quieter suburbs of Kota Damansara fully operated by a Korean couple had me craving for Korean food. Since everything was handled by original Korean hands, I assumed the food would be more authentic.

IMG_2428

A simple, no frill small corner lot shop was packed to the brim when we arrived at about 8pm. They had to open a table for us outside the shop. Wasn’t the best dining experience especially with all the BBQ smoke coming directly at us. I vowed to make reservations the next time!

IMG_2432

The usual fare of Banchans (side-dishes) that you get in all Korean joints. The squid was most memorable, so springy in texture! And I’ve always loved the sweet-spicy anchovies. Simple yum!

IMG_2434

We placed on order the couple dinner set @ RM38.90. If you’re familiar with Korean cuisine, their BBQ items are usually the best sellers. You can of course find them here as well, but we decided to skip it this time as portions here looked small and pretty pricey for what you get. But I’m sure it tastes good since a few tables did order it and boy did it smell good!

IMG_2430

We settled for the Pork Kimchi Soup. This was pretty average, with generous slices of pork, mushrooms and vegetables. The soup was addictive though I couldn’t get enough of it!

IMG_2431

The Chicken Chilli Bulgogi was a winner that night. Loved the combination of generous serving of onions and sliced chicken. Went perfect with rice :)

IMG_2441

Both of us polished this dish clean :D

IMG_2429

In addition to the set, we also ordered their Beancurd Stew, RM13.80. Portions were generous. The stew came with clams, mushrooms, chicken and a few other ingredients. The soup was also very addictive, I was telling my companion that it tasted like our local Maggi soup noodles :P

IMG_2435

The set menu also offered a choice of Steamed Dumplings or eggs and we opted for the former. No regrets! The dumplings were fat and juicy, with generous amounts of pork filling.

We were served watermelon slices and a small glass of cold barley rice drink to finish off our meal. Perfect ending to a wholesome, delicious meal!

A good place for a nice, quiet, decent meal if you are craving for a Korean fare. Do remember to make reservations in advance though! Set lunches are served from RM9.90 onwards as well, will definitely go back to check that out!

ronnycakes reviews: Kimchi Haru; Jaya One

Most of the Korean restaurants that I have been to are usually pretty expensive so it is a refreshing change to find a Korean place that isn’t harsh on the wallet and still has pretty good tasting food.
Written on the menu is their motto: “Healthy food and No MSG”; I don’t think I felt thirsty after the meal so I suppose they do hold true to their motto. :p

Kimchi Haru has been around for quite some time and since ramen noodles are one of my favourite things to eat in the whole wide world (I can be happy eating noodles everyday), Wils took me to try them out.

P1050580-1
Refillable banchan – Kimchi, my fav!

P1050588
For sharing we ordered the Korean Dumplings which were pan-fried with a filling of pork, glass noodles and chives. Albeit a little different from the dumplings that I normally have, it still tasted great with a crispy exterior and juicy filling.

P1050579
The Seafood Ramyun (RM11.80) came with prawns in spicy soup.

P1050587
The Spicy Ramyun (RM 10.50) was just noodles with kimchi in spicy soup (similar to the soup in the Seafood Ramyun but a tad spicier) but the soup was tasty with a spicy kick enough to encourage me to slurp it all up on my own.

All in all it’s a nice Korean restaurant to try out as they have quite a variety of food to choose from, as well as having a cozy ambience. Prices are also easy on the wallet so it won’t hurt to come by to try out their other stuff if you’re into Korean food.

Clarissane reviews: Ko Hyang Korean Cuisine @ Fahrenheit 88

I for one am not a huge fan of Korean food. I find it can get a bit overwhelming aka ‘jelak’ after a few bites :p

But I find this Korean joint to be not bad, perhaps they try to suit it to our local taste buds. The outlet in The Gardens is always packed during lunch and dinner…so when I saw that the outlet here was empty, I did not think twice about stepping in :)

IMG_2196

IMG_2198

Alike all Korean joints, appetizers are served once you’ve sat down. I really enjoyed the appetizers here! Kimchi, Ikan Bilis and Bean Sprouts.. absolutely yummy! I had it refilled too :D

IMG_2207

For starters, we ordered their Kim Chi Jeon, RM9.50. Its basically Korean Kimchi Pancake. To me, it didn’t really stand out. The pancake tasted more like egg coated flour. And the sauce dipping was not all too delicious either.

IMG_2209

I had one piece and decided to allow my stomach yummier food :p

IMG_2202

Dak Bokem, RM16.90 is basically stir fried chicken with vegetables and rice. This dish was pretty good I kept stealing the sauce from it to go with my Bimbimbap :p This is on my list to order the next time I visit!

IMG_2205

For my main, I had the Dol Sot Bim Bim Bab, RM16.90. It is in fact stone pot rice mixed with vegetables, chilli paste and a choice of either chicken or beef. I usually find the beef used in Korean joints to be too overwhelming with the really strong beef aroma still lingering in the dish even after its cooked. So i settled for the chicken instead :)

IMG_2208

They way to eat this dish is to mix everything up and enjoy it all mashed :) This was pretty good and it made me feel really healthy too with all the vegetables in it. It would even more delicious though if they were to add more seasoning as I thought it lacked in taste A BIT :p But then again, more taste = more MSG. This place claims that they use NO MSG in their dishes. I didn’t feel very thirsty a few hours after the meal so I guess they can attest to that.

A pretty okay place for fast and reasonable Korean cuisine. If you’re looking for more authentic Korean delicacy, DAORAE probably is the one to go!
