As more and more mass-produced sticks of ice start to call themselves ice-cream these days, it is incredibly refreshing to stumble upon those that are lovingly hand made, au naturel and come in a variety of interesting flavours.
One such place is Fru-t-pop, a little popsicle-cum-café that we discovered on Facebook (due to a posting from My Elephant). Fru-t-pop is run by an Indian lady, who hand makes all her popsicle sticks without added flavouring, sugar, additives or coloring. Basically what you see is what you get, if the label says apple and orange then you’re getting 100% apple and 100% orange.
I absolutely loveeeeee love loveeee the deco of the place! Everything is so colourful and whimsy (think pastel chalk covered menu boards). According to their website, the owner was inspired by the Beatles “yellow submarine” book and adorned her café with bright happy colours! Also, the girls in those photos are all her daughters.
No sugar and no flavouring! No need to feel guilty about indulging!
On to the ices! The lady boss of Fru-t-pop was incredibly nice, very helpful and recommended to us what were the more popular flavours. In the end we chose Pineapple and Mandarin (RM4.90). First bite and you know that everything that went into that popsicle is 100% natural. The pineapple taste was strong, with bits of pineapple flesh for us to chew on too! However, the mandarin seemed a little subtle. On the downside, the size of the popsicle was pretty small for the price but of course you’ll expect to pay a little more for ingredients that are wholly natural.
Fru-t-pop also serves healthy wraps which we didn’t try (already had our lunch next door teehee).
Fru-t-pop definitely warrants a return visit to check out all the different flavours that they have (I spied a coconut and dragonfruit one!) and perhaps to sample their healthy wraps too. Do check this little store out for a refreshing popsicle if you’re in the area!
