Clarissane reviews: Toast & Roast, PJ

I for one am a fan of Hakka Noodles. I love the texture of the noodles, something like the Wan Tan Mee type, but not quite the same with its springier and fatter noodles which is usually accompanied with minced pork meat. Like I mentioned before, I cannot live without my pork so I’m always on the lookout for good Char Siew or anything porky :D

This shop just behind Tropicana City Mall in PJ (next to KEN II Condominiums) boasts of its melt-in-your-mouth Char Siew and Hakka noodles which see droves of people during lunch time.

I always order their Hakka Noodles with Char Siew, RM4.50 to satisfy both my cravings at one go! This version comes in two sizes, small and large. I usually settle for the smaller portion to save my stomach for the side orders :p

Indeed, the Char Siew here is by far one of the good ones in town..just because it literally melts in your mouth! Dip it into the dark sweet sauce provided and top that with a hint of blended chilli and OMG absolutely yummylicious char siew! The noodles are also nice and springy, topped with generous amounts of Chee Yau Char (fried pork skin) and spring onions. They also have the usual Hakka Noodles with Minced Pork for the same price. However, I must commend that the noodles are a tad too oily..I’ve been told that the oil is needed so that the noodles won’t stick together. Hmm.

In my first visit here, I ordered a separate serving of Char Siew, RM7. Most people usually order this and the plain Hakka noodles just so that they can savour more Char Siew rather than the miserable four slices if you were to order the Hakka noodles with Char Siew by itself (Trust me, you will crave for more!). This is a good option if you are here with a big company.

We also tried their Turbo Meal, RM7.50 which consists of a mixture of their Char Siew, Siew Yok and Roast Chicken with Rice. Again, the one that stands out is the Char Siew. The other two were mediocre and pretty standard..the rice was fragrant though!

As a side order, we had their Dumplings in Clear Soup, RM1 per piece. I’ve ordered this before and i recall it tasted better in my previous visit compared to the one I had recently. I think they did not thaw the dumpling properly so it tasted a bit undercooked =/ This aside, they were quite generous with the dumpling filling..too bad the cooking didn’t compliment this :p

Ever since I discovered this place, I always come here whenever I crave for good Hakka Noodles. The char siew is just……. OMG! Out of this world. Hahahaha well, maybe I’m exaggerating a little but it is really worth the trip!

The secret of their melt-in-the-mouth char siew lies in the fats of the pork that lie in between the meat..that when BBQ-ed, a gooey, tangy like flavour from its seasoning causes it to be so crispy. The pork fat is basically the ‘thing’ that melts in your mouth. (Soooooo well, yes I guess if you’re on a diet you should stay away from this place :P)
