ronnycakes reviews: Carnation Cafe, Disneyland Park, Anaheim

Once again, it seems like we’ve left our blog lying under a thin layer of dust, especially after we took a long break after coming back from our holiday in the States (!!), and especially after getting over that severe jet lag that I was feeling. It’s been 10 years since my last plane trip and I’ve never travelled further than South East Asia before, so the long-haul flight and 16 hour time difference was especially hard on me. The first few days I looked absolutely horrifying in photos because I was so god darned tired. XD

Anywayyyyy, I only have one word to summarize our trip: FUN! :D
Especially Disneyland... gosh, it’s like my idea of heaven. I know, I know, I sound like an absolute child. But really, I had such great time. The rides were awesome, the “cast members” were ultra polite, and everything was super whimsy and vintage and old-school Mickey.

Food there was pretty expensive though, but on our last night at Disneyland Park, Wils and I decided to splurge and have a meal at one of the park restaurants, and we went for Carnation Cafe which has made a name for itself for serving honest American fare at prices that are not too cut-throat (for American standards that is).

I had a Warm Spinach Salad with Grilled Chicken (USD14.99), Grilled Chicken, Spinach, Boiled Eggs, Sauteed Shiitake Mushrooms, and Pickled Onions tossed with Warm Pancetta-Mustard Seed Vinaigrette.
One thing good about the USA is that all portions are at least twice the size of the ones you get here in KL. Salads over here would hardly be enough for a snack let alone a meal. So anyway, this warm spinach salad was one of the best salads I had over there... it was such a change from the generic romaine lettuce, and the dressing was tangy and savoury.

Wils had his Main Street Cheeseburger (USD11.99): Angus Chuck Patty, Tillamook Cheddar, Tomato, Red Onion, Lettuce and House Sauce on Toasted Brioche. He told me it was one of the best burgers he had (or maybe we were just super hungry haha).

I still miss that salad.

ronnycakes reviews: Ben’s General Food Store, Bangsar Village I

Happy New Year to all our readers! We may have gone on a short hiatus during the festive season but rest assured that we’re back and will be updating this space often. :)

Anyway, it’s taken me quite a while to pay a visit to Ben’s General Food Store which has been open for ages; since every time I peruse the menu all I seem to see are pizzas and salads… :p and I’m not really a huge fan of either. However, I’ve been hearing great things about the food there so I decided to take the plunge and had a quick lunch there for a girls’ day out.

We ordered a healthy fruit juice (no sugar added and you can also request for no ice) each to go with our meals, mine was Green Apple and Carrot Juice (RM10.90).

Most food bloggers have nothing but praise for the Barley and Button Mushroom Salad (11.90) and after trying it myself, I can definitely see why. At first glance, it looks bland and in no way able to fill up your stomach, but surprisingly I felt quite full after finishing it all off. It was savory and slightly tangy, with well-marinated button mushrooms and the aroma of chopped spring onions. Definitely a winner.

My friend had the Moroccan Lamb Meatballs with a side of Beetroot and Kidney Bean Salad (RM17.90). You can choose your side of salad from their array of choices. I didn’t try the meatballs for myself but my friend seemed to enjoy her meal, and the salad (which came with walnuts as well!) was very refreshing when accompanied with something meaty and cheesy.

On a side note, I love how they use retro canteen-style plates and bowls.

Clarissane tells me that the pizzas are amazing and during our visit I did notice the tables around us ordering pizzas to share, but since it was just the two of us we were unsure whether we could actually finish it all on our own.
BGFS gave me a pleasant surprise and definitely merits a revisit, especially for the pizzas and the delicious looking roast chicken and potatoes that I only saw after I finished eating argh!

Looks so good. *drools*
